advantages and disadvantages

When compared to other flaps the venous flow through flap has several advantages:

  • Single stage procedure

  • Able to revascularize and resurface in a single stage

  • Thin and pliable tissue

  • Low donor site morbidity

  • Spares a donor artery

  • Good cosmetic results

  • Can include composite tissue

A venous flap used to resurface a thumb tip amputation provides pliable, durable and well vascularized coverage.

VFTFs also have some disadvantages:

  • Requires microvascular techniques - although we do not think this is truly a disadvantage.

  • May benefit from a two person team depending on the circumstances

  • Longer hospitalization - we like to use dextran post-operatively.

Although size constraints limit its use in general reconstructions throughout the body, it has unique clinical efficacy in small and moderate sized defects. In selected cases, it represents an excellent option available to the creative microsurgeon when planning complex reconstructions of the hand.
