Background:
Dr. del Piñal is the Head of the Institute for Hand-Wrist and Plastic Surgery. Private Practice and Hospital Mutua Montañesa, Santander, Spain.
Dr. del Piñal recieved his MD degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and did his Plastic Surgery training in Madrid. He was a Fellow in Microsurgery with Ian Taylor and then a fellow in Hand Surgery with the Kleinert Group in Louisville, Kentucky.

Born in Santander, northern Spain, Dr. Francisco del Piñal is considered one of the world’s best hand surgeons. His contributions in the fields of microsurgical toe to hand transfer or arthroscopic surgery techniques on wrist fractures are endorsed and used internationally.

After an intense professional experience in Australia and the United States, he returned to his homeland in 1992 to found the Instituto de Cirugía Plástica y de la Mano (Institute of Plastic and Hand Surgery), who runs today along with the units of Hand-Wrist and Plastic-Reconstructive Surgery at Hospital Mutua Montañesa and Hand and Wrist Surgery at Hospital La Luz (Quirón group).

Del Piñal was Secretary General of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Association (EWAS) till 2014, where he currently chairs its Advisory Council (now International Wrist Arthroscopy Society, IWAS). His career is marked by numerous awards and notable participations in medical events with global reach. Del Piñal has been principal guest professor at the Curtis National Hand Center of the University of Baltimore (USA) and the first Spanish surgeon to take part in the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. He has also occupied the honorary chair Harold E. Joseph E. Kleinert-Kutz of the University of Louisville (USA).

Besides, Dr. del Piñal has been keynote speaker and honour guest at meetings not just of the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (SECPRE) but also of the leading national societies for hand surgery, arthroscopy and microsurgery: Australian, Argentinian, Belgian, British, Chilean, Dutch, Hongkongese, Hungarian, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, South African and Uruguayan, among others.

He is the author of two pioneering and successful medical books, both international benchmark in the fields of wrist fracture and arthroscopy: ‘Arthroscopic Management of Distal Radius Fractures’ and ‘Arthroscopic Management of Ulnar Pain’. Furthermore, he has more than 500 papers and publications at national and international meetings, together with the leadership of a global training program already completed by more than 250 specialists from around the world.
