Donor Nerves

The potential donor nerves for auto-grafting is limited to cutaneous nerves of the extremities, most commonly

  • Superficial radial nerve

  • Medial cutaneous nerves of the arm and forearm,

  • Posterior and lateral cutaneous nerves of the thigh

  • Sural nerve

  • Lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm

  • Superficial peroneal nerve

Other sources of nerve graft that have been reported include the  intercostal nerves and the segmental motor nerves of the rectus muscle.  These are small nerves that are difficult to dissect and only used in unusual circumstances.  Recently,  nerve allografting requiring systemic immunosuppresion has been performed.  This area is controversial since immunosupression medications can increase the risk of infection and can also lead potentially to a risk of kidney failure and cancer.
