Heparin

Heparin is a glycosoaminoglycan that is a naturally produced substance.  It has an anticoagulation effect by inhibiting the formation of fibrin clots. Heparin acts primarily at the following sites in the normal coagulation system

  • Combines with antithrombin III (heparin cofactor) to accerate the neurtralization of thrombin which prevents conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin

  • Inactivates factor X which prevent conversion of prothrombin to thrombin

  • Prevents the formation of a stable fibrin clot by inhibiting the activation of fibrin-stabilizing factor.

Heparin does not have fibrinolytic activity, therefore, it will not lyse existing clots.
